About Tarkarli Tour

Tarkarli Beach

Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. It is 546 k.m. away from Mumbai, 6 kms. south of Malvan, on the west coast of India. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg.

Scuba Diving

In India there are a very few places where scuba diving can be done and Malvan is one of them. Due to its relatively clear sea waters, Malvan serves as a perfect spot for scuba diving (done mostly with surface oxygen supply) and snorkelling. Near the outer walls of Sindhudurg fort one can see lots of live corals and beautiful marine life under the sea.

Sindhudurg fort

Huge sea rocks of Malvan have easefully shouldered the responsibility of two Forts Sindhudurg & Padmagad on their broad chest. The name of the fort is given to the Sindhudurg district. Tourist from all over the world visit throughout the year to see this Maratha glory The fort was built with the help of huge rocks on the Kurte Island which amazes people & one appreciates imaginative power of Shivaji Maharaj. In 1664 Shivaji Maharaj erected this fort on 44 acres of land. In Sindhudurg Fort there is ‘Shri Shiv Rajeshwar temple’ of Shivaji Maharaj. Also there are temples of Hanuman, Jarimari mandir and Goddess ‘Bhavani Temple’. Impressions of Shivaji Maharaj fingerprints found to be preserved here on one of the wall. Also lies, inside the Fort Worth seeing temples of Bhavani Mata, Shambhu Mahadev, and Jarimari & Mahapurush. All are in good conditions.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings. This beautiful temple near beach has alluring architecture with reminiscent of South Indian style of temple architecture. Yadav Kings built this temple in 1100 A. D. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj who rejuvenated this temple many times was a frequent visitor to this temple. This temple is also famous as Kashi of South Konkan.

Velas Turtle Festival on 24th 25th February 2017

03 Velas Beach Photo 1

About Velas Turtle Festival

Maharashtra is blessed with 720 kms long coastline. Shared with Konkan, Thane, and Ratnagiri also Sindhudurg districts. Many marine creatures come visit. However, the exact count and type are unknown. As from what is believed there is not a detailed study available. In the year 2000-01, it was found that a species of turtle, Olive Ridley is a prominent visitor to the shores of Maharashtra for breeding purposes. Other species are the Green Turtle, Hawksbill and the Leatherback. A lot of the other information is already available online, like what does turtles eat, how a turtle looks like. The difference between a turtle, tortoise and a terrapin.

Why Velas Turtle Festival 2017 ?

Velas is a small fishing village on the western coast of Maharashtra. About 220 kms away from Mumbai, a little over a hundred houses on the coast of the Arabian Sea. It is that time of the year again - when a tiny grey head pokes out of the golden sand and takes a breath of the fresh salty air of the Arabian Sea. It is a culmination of a lengthy process, which started when, under the cover of darkness, it’s mother emerged out from the rolling waves to lay her heap of 100-120 eggs on the sandy beach. Oblivious to the world that awaits it outside it’s sandy cocoon, the tiny hatchling is soon followed by a hundred others, all crawling their way towards the brightest lights of the horizon- in this case, the sea. TreksandTrails, India invites you to this journey from the nest to the sea which draws oohs and aahs from tourists - each of whom is gathered on the shore to witness this miracle of Nature. The location is Velas, a remote village in Mandangad taluka in Ratnagiri district approx. a 6 hour drive from Mumbai.

Kindly Note:
  • Hatchling sighting is not guaranteed.
  • Maximum batch size is 25 travellers on first come first basis.
  • Travel by private non A/C vehicle.
  • Pick up and Drop at centralized locations only.

NGO - Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra

TreksandTrails, India sincerely appreciates the great efforts been undertaken by local NGO - Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra, as they have borne fruit since 2002, each year all the nests on the western coast at Velas, Murud, Harnai, Dapoli and other sites are carefully protected and conserved to ensure both natural and human threats are reduced. All the eggs laid on the beach are collected and placed in a common hatchery which is barricaded from all sides and is guarded throughout the day. Average eggs laid by a female turtle is 100. The incubation time required for these eggs is between 50 – 55 days.

Once the emerging of the hatchling begins, their moments creates small depression in the sand, these mark increase as the days go by. Thus experts can then determine the activity in the nest. One the hatchling emergence from the nest, it’s very important to release it into the sea. Hence each morning at 07:00 and evening at 17:30 - 18:00 the baskets covering the lid are open to check if any turtles have hatched if they have they are counted and carefully laid in another basket and taken closer to the sea. They are then gently placed on the sand and they slowly make their way to the water. Their first baby steps are not only endearing to watch but also important if it is a female, as she records in her memory the site of her birth only to return here after 10 - 15 years to lay her eggs.

Listed here are a few threats / dangers to Turtles:

  • Poaching of eggs
  • Natural Predators
  • Trapped in fishing nets
  • Sand excavations.
  • Artificial bunds/walls/tadpoles built to prevent costal land from erosion.
  • Unnatural plantations along the coastline.
  • Illuminations along the coastline.
  • Ports and Harbours, Tourism.
  • Pollution both land and water.

Trek to Alang – Madan – Kulang the Toughest Trek in the Sahyadri on February 2017

Alang Fort Top

Why AMK - Alang Madan Kulang Fort

For those who have just completed the monsoon trekking season, Must be all geared up for a new adventure. We call upon the survivors to explore the most difficult trek in the Sahyadri. An adventure to explore the path less taken, Come on pack your bags, and join the adventure

About Alang Fort

Alang Fort (also Alangad) is a fort in Nashik district, Maharashtra, India. It is one of the three forts, the others being Madangad and Kulang, in the Kalsubai range of the Western Ghats. They are the most difficult to reach forts in Nasik District. A dense forest cover make these treks difficult. These three forts are a little neglected due to very heavy rains in the area and a difficult confusing path to the forts.

About Kulang fort

Being in the same region of the three forts its said climb to Kulag is the most difficult. On the way up climbing, we come across patches of rock cut steps. It takes 6 hours to reach from Kulanwadi to the fort. On the fort to see around 5 water cisterns. From here we could also see Mahuli with the 3 pinnacles. One can also stay at the caves here.

About Madan fort

The climb preferred is usually between Madan and Alang. The time taken could around 3-4 hours to reach the step after leaving Kulung fort. Over here rock climbing would be required as the wall of the steps was destroyed during the cannon fire. Use of a fixed rope is required. There is one large cave on this fort and 2 water cistern. The top of the fort is a huge plateau. On the fort, there are two caves, a small temple and 11 water cisterns. Remnants of buildings are spread over the fort. Kalasubai, Aundh Fort, Patta and Bitangad are to the east of the fort, Harihar, Trimbakgad and Anjaneri to its north and Harishchandragad, Aajobagad, Khutta (pinnacle), Ratangad and Katrabai to its south.
