Overview

Bhandardara Fireflies Festival – Kajava Mahotsav 2026

Nestled deep within the Sahyadri ranges, Bhandardara transforms into one of nature's rarest spectacles every monsoon eve β€” the Kajava Festival, when millions of fireflies awaken in synchronized brilliance, turning entire trees into living chandeliers of light. Our premium lakeside camping invites you to witness this fleeting natural marvel, a phenomenon that lasts only a few weeks each year just before the first rains kiss the Western Ghats.

As dusk settles over the still waters of Bhandardara Lake, the forest comes alive. Walk softly along ancient trails as Hirwa, Sonkhel, and Bhingori fireflies pulse in unison across hirda, behada, and mango trees β€” a courtship dance choreographed by nature itself, untouched by city lights. It is an experience that humbles even the most well-travelled adventurer, a moment where time slows and the dark forest breathes in golden light.

The day is yours to roam β€” trek to the base of Mt. Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra, or wander toward the cascading Randha Falls and the historic Ratangad fort silhouetted against the monsoon sky. Back at camp, an unlimited spread of warm Maharashtrian cuisine awaits, served under the open sky as acoustic guitar melodies drift across the lake, weaving conversations between strangers who quickly become friends.

As the bonfire crackles into the night, lean back and look up β€” a sky brimming with stars above, a forest pulsing with fireflies around, and the lake mirroring it all in perfect stillness. The Bhandardara Fireflies Festival is more than a camping trip; it is a quiet pilgrimage to one of the last untouched corners of the Sahyadris, where light returns to the earth in the most enchanting way possible.

A once-a-year wonder. A lifetime of memory.

Important Notes

  • Forest Entry Charges: Participants must pay forest entry fees at the Bhandardara toll gate directly.
  • Reach on Time: Please arrive before sunset β€” the forest department does not permit late entry during firefly season.
  • Fireflies Walk Etiquette: No flash photography, no white torches, no loud noise. Fireflies are sensitive β€” we move slowly and quietly to keep the magic alive.
  • Medical Disclosure: Inform us in advance about any medical conditions or allergies.
  • Personal Responsibility: Participants are responsible for their own belongings and health.
  • Avoid Valuables: Please leave gold and expensive jewelry at home.
  • Weather Contingency: In case of pre-monsoon showers, tents will be set up under sheds. We cannot control the weather and will provide the best possible alternative.
  • Trek Leader's Word is Final: The trek leader's decisions on safety, timing, and route are final and binding.
  • Jain Food: Available on prior request, with a minimum of 4–5 participants.
  • What to Carry: A blanket or 2 bedsheets, warm layer, torch with red filter (preferred for fireflies), water bottle, personal medication, basic toiletries, and a change of clothes.

A Gentle Reminder

The Kajava phenomenon lasts only 2–3 weeks each year, just before the monsoon breaks. Once the first heavy rains arrive, the fireflies retreat for another twelve months. This is not a trip you can reschedule β€” it's a window that opens once a year.
