Kothaligad Trek - Peth Fort Trek
Kothaligad Fort, also known as Peth Fort, rises above the tribal village of Peth near Karjat, roughly 90 km from Mumbai. The fort is known for its dramatic pinnacle, panoramic Sahyadri views, and ancient caves cut directly into the rock face. As you climb from the village, the pinnacle stays in view the whole way, marking your path to the top.
Along the route you'll pass the Goddess cave, an old water cistern, and the spacious Bhairoba cave, notable for its flat floor and carved pillars. From here, a final stretch of steep rock-cut steps takes you to the summit — and if you time it right, a sunrise worth the climb.
Kothaligad works well as a short sunrise trek near Mumbai: manageable for beginners, rewarding for anyone who wants history, caves, and a 360-degree view without a multi-day commitment.

Kothaligad Trek | Peth Fort Trek | Trek near Mumbai & Pune
A monsoon trek to Kothaligad Fort brings you through lush green forests and cascading waterfalls — one of the most popular short treks near Karjat. Kothaligad, also called the Fort of Peth for its proximity to Peth village, sits east of Karjat off the Karjat-Murbad Road. The summit offers a full 360-degree view of the Sahyadri range, making it a solid weekend option for both Mumbai and Pune-based trekkers.
How do I reach Kothaligad from Mumbai?
Take a suburban train toward Karjat and get off at Neral station. From there, shared 6-seater Vikram/tum-tum rickshaws run to Kashele for about Rs 55 per seat. Peth (Kothaligad) is located in Shahapur Taluka, roughly 21 km northeast of Karjat, and the fort itself stands 3,100 ft high — known for its temples and caves.
The trek is short and manageable enough for the whole family, with public transport back to Kothaligad harder to find late in the evening, so plan your return accordingly. Local sharing rickshaws and state transport buses also run between Karjat and Kothaligad.
