How to prepare for monsoon camping

Preparing for monsoon camping requires some extra considerations due to the wet and unpredictable weather. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

  • Check the weather forecast: Stay updated on the weather conditions and rainfall predictions for your camping location.
  • Choose a suitable campsite. Look for elevated areas or campsites with good drainage to avoid water pooling around your tent.
  • Invest in quality rain gear: Carry waterproof jackets, pants, and boots to keep yourself dry during rainfall. Pack extra pairs of socks and clothes.
  • Pack the right camping gear. Ensure your tent is waterproof and seam-sealed. Carry a groundsheet or tarp to protect the tent floor from moisture. Use waterproof dry bags or plastic bags to keep your belongings dry.
  • Bring mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes are common during the monsoon. Use mosquito repellent creams or sprays to protect yourself from bites.
  • Set up a sheltered cooking area. Rain can make cooking challenging. Set up a tarp or canopy as a sheltered cooking area to protect your stove and food from getting wet.
  • Carry proper lighting. Days can get dark quickly during heavy rains. Pack extra batteries, headlamps, and lanterns to ensure you have adequate lighting.
  • Plan for entertainment: Pack some indoor games or books to keep yourself entertained during prolonged periods of rain.
  • Stay cautious of flash floods. Avoid camping near rivers or streams during heavy rain, as they can quickly flood. Be aware of your surroundings and stay updated on local advisories.
  • Practise Leave No Trace principles: Be mindful of the environment and leave the campsite as you found it. Dispose of waste properly and avoid damaging the natural surroundings.
