History of Murudeshwar:

The history of Murudeshwar is deeply intertwined with Hindu mythology, tracing its roots back to the time of the Ramayana, an ancient Indian epic. According to legend, the Hindu gods sought eternal life and invincibility by worshipping the Atma-Linga, a sacred symbol of Lord Shiva's essence.
The story unfolds with the relentless pursuit of the Atma-Linga by Ravana, the King of Lanka, who yearned for immortality. In response to Ravana's unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him, granting his request on one condition: the Atma-Linga must never touch the ground until it reached Lanka, for once it did, it would become immovable.
Aware of the dire consequences if Ravana succeeded, Lord Vishnu devised a plan to thwart him. Ganesha, in the guise of a Brahmin boy, struck a deal with Ravana, holding the Atma-Linga during Ravana's evening rituals. However, a clever ruse led to the Atma-Linga touching the ground, scattering fragments that would later become integral to the history of Murudeshwar.
