Build a Bike Charity

Here are the steps for organizing a bicycle-building and donation team-building activity:

  1. Treks and Trails help choose a charity or organization that accepts bicycle donations. Examples may include a local children's hospital, a youth organization, or a homeless shelter.
  2. We will purchase the necessary supplies, including bicycles, bike parts, tools, and safety gear.
  3. Divide the group into teams of 4-6 members. Each team will be responsible for building one Bicycle.
  4. Set up a workspace with all the necessary tools and supplies. We will set up multiple workstations to accommodate all teams.
  5. Provide instructions on how to build a bicycle. You can use instructional videos and manuals or have a professional bike mechanic assist teams.
  6. Once the bicycles are built, teams can add finishing touches, such as decorations or personal touches.
  7. Test the bicycles to ensure they are safe and functional.
  8. Deliver the bicycles to the chosen charity or organization. You may want to coordinate a small ceremony to present the bikes and explain the purpose of the donation.
  9. Debrief the activity with the group. Encourage participants to reflect on the experience and discuss what they learned about teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

This activity can be customized in various ways, such as adding a race or obstacle course element to the team building activity.

Pedal Together Obstacle Cycling Course

Materials provided for team building activity:

  • Enough bicycles for each team member
  • Helmets and other safety gear
  • An ample open space, such as a park or a parking lot
  • Cones or other markers to create an obstacle course
  • Optional: snacks and water for participants

Instructions:

  1. Divide the group into teams of 4-6 members. Assign a team leader or captain for each team.
  2. Provide each team with a bicycle and safety gear.
  3. Explain that each team will participate in challenges requiring teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  4. Set up an obstacle course using cones or other markers. The system should include various challenges, such as sharp turns, narrow paths, and obstacles to maneuver around.
  5. Instruct each team to complete the obstacle course as quickly as possible. The team leader should assign roles to each team member, such as the rider, the navigator, and the coach.
  6. After each team completes the obstacle course, debrief with the group to discuss what worked well and what could be improved. Encourage participants to share their insights and ideas for improving team performance.
  7. Repeat the activity with new challenges or variations to keep participants engaged and challenged.

Variations:

  1. Relay race: Instead of completing the obstacle course as a team, each team member completes a part of the system as part of a relay race. The team with the fastest time wins.
  2. Scavenger hunt: Create a scavenger hunt using bicycles as the mode of transportation. Each team must solve clues and navigate to different locations to collect items or complete tasks.
  3. Long-distance ride: Plan a longer bike ride that requires teams to work together to navigate and overcome obstacles. This variation can be an excellent option for outdoor team-building events or company retreats.
