Overview

Andharban Jungle Trek from Mumbai — Monsoon Forest Trek

The Andharban Jungle Trek is one of the most loved monsoon treks in the Sahyadris — a 14 km descending forest trail through the "dark dense forest" that gives Andharban its name. Unlike most Sahyadri treks with punishing climbs, the Andharban trek is a gradual descent: you start high near Pimpri village at around 2,100 feet and walk steadily down to Bhira Dam, so there are no exhausting ascents along the way. It is an easy-to-moderate jungle trek, ideal for beginners, nature lovers, and first-time monsoon trekkers.

The trail walks along a ridge with sweeping views of the Kundalika Valley, Bhira Dam, Devkund Waterfall, and the mountain ranges of Tamhini Ghat. Evergreen forest shades the first 6 to 8 km, after which the Andharban trek descends into the Konkan to reach Bhira village over the final stretch — the same valley where the Kundalika river begins, famous for the white-water rafting at Kolad.

Why Trek Andharban in the Monsoon

Andharban means "dark dense forest" in Marathi, and during the rains the jungle truly comes alive — with streams, waterfalls, drifting fog, and lush green canopy. It is one of the most untouched forest trails open to trekkers near Mumbai and Pune, and because it stays relatively crowd-free even on weekends, it offers a quieter, more immersive jungle experience than the busier Sahyadri treks.

As you walk, you cross open plateaus with tall mountains on one side and a valley dropping away on the other, before entering thick forest threaded with small streams and waterfall crossings. Along the way you can spot the Tamhini Ghat highway, the Kundalika and Plus Valley, Bhira Dam, and a string of seasonal waterfalls. Birdlife is rich too — kingfishers, Asian paradise flycatchers, minivets, falcons, and the Malabar whistling thrush are all regulars, and the forest floor blooms with wildflowers like Karvi (which flowers once every seven years), Sonki, and many more.

The Andharban Trek Route

We offer the Andharban jungle trek from Mumbai, with your journey running Borivali to Pimpri and back to Borivali. The package includes forest permits, AC bus travel, breakfast, lunch, and experienced Andharban trek guides.

After reaching the trailhead, the team runs a quick introduction and a do's-and-don'ts briefing for the jungle trail. From there the marked path winds gently downhill through verdant woodland and overflowing waterfalls. You will cross several small streams and three larger waterfall crossings — on heavy-rainfall days these can become difficult or impossible to cross, which is exactly why following your trek leader's instructions is compulsory. The weather here is unpredictable, fog can cut visibility sharply, and getting separated in dense forest is a real risk, so trekkers are asked to stay within sight and inform the leader before moving ahead.

After a refreshment break at the Hirdi plateau, we enjoy the same forest views on the way back to the Pimpri starting point, cross the three large waterfalls again, and soak in the cool microclimate of the woodland. At the base village you change into dry clothes, enjoy a home-cooked lunch, and begin the return journey.

Important Notes

Andharban is a protected forest, so trekking here requires permission from the Forest Department and a guide is mandatory — venturing in alone is genuinely dangerous, since fog makes navigation hard and sudden rain can cause flash floods at the waterfall crossings. Proper trekking shoes with good grip are compulsory for the rocky trail and stream crossings. Carry a light backpack and a good waterproof cover for your phone — you will get mobile network along much of the route, so you can stay in touch and capture the jungle safely.

Frequently Asked Questions — Andharban Jungle Trek

What is the Andharban trek and why is it famous?
Andharban means "dark dense forest" in Marathi. It is a gradual descending jungle trek through one of the most untouched forest trails in the Sahyadris, connecting Tamhini Ghat to the Konkan region near Pimpri village. During the monsoon the forest comes alive with waterfalls, streams, fog, and lush greenery, making it one of the most popular rainy-season treks near Mumbai and Pune. It is also known as the Dark Forest Trek or Andharban Forest Trek — all the same trek.

How long is the Andharban trek and how long does it take?
The trek is about 14 km and takes roughly 10 hours including breaks for snacks and lunch. The route is mostly a gradual descent with a few inclines and no punishing climbs, starting near Pimpri Dam at about 2,160 feet. On our current itinerary we trek in and return to the Pimpri start point; we do not descend all the way to Bhira Dam.

How difficult is the trek? Is it good for beginners?
It is rated medium difficulty. The descent itself is gentle, but you cross streams, waterfalls, and slippery rocky sections, so reasonable fitness and endurance are needed. It suits confident first-time trekkers, but it is not an easy stroll. Difficulty rises sharply in heavy rain, when crossings become harder, so the trek leader's instructions are essential.

What is the distance from Mumbai, Pune, and Lonavala?
The trek start point near Pimpri is about 133 km from Mumbai (roughly 5 hours by road), 70 km from Pune (about 3 hours), and 55 km from Lonavala (about 2 hours). The roads through Tamhini Ghat are in poor condition with dense fog, so journeys can take longer.

When is the best time to do the Andharban trek?
The monsoon, June to September, is the best and only real season — the trail comes alive with waterfalls, streams, and mist. Outside the rains the waterfalls dry up and the months turn hot and humid. The Forest Department may temporarily close the route during peak heavy-rainfall periods, both for trekker safety at the waterfall crossings and because it is the breeding season for forest wildlife.

Is a forest permit required?
Yes. Andharban is a protected forest, and a permit issued in limited numbers by the Forest Department is compulsory to enter. A guide is mandatory. Treks and Trails India arranges the required forest permits as part of the organised trek. Parking and forest entry charges payable to locals and forest officers may also apply.

Is the Andharban trek open and not banned in 2026?
Andharban is sometimes called the most-banned trek in Maharashtra because permits and route access depend on Forest Department decisions each season, which are often released close to the monsoon. We confirm open dates as permits are issued, so please check with us for the latest batch availability.

How do I reach the trailhead, and can I drive myself?
We run the trek by private AC bus, as the region has poor public transport and rough roads. You can self-drive to the Pimpri Dam start point (searchable on Google Maps), and we will share the exact GPS location, but note there is little to no mobile network, heavy fog, and very limited help if your car breaks down. We will not wait for self-drivers who arrive late. On our return-to-Pimpri itinerary, the start and end points are the same, so self-drivers do not need a separate driver.

Where do the pickups happen from Mumbai?
Our Andharban package is Mumbai to Mumbai with centralised pickups, typically from Dadar East, Sion, Chembur, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, and McDonald's Kalamboli. We create a WhatsApp group and share the live bus location for smooth coordination.

How many days does the trek take?
It is an overnight departure: the bus leaves at night, you trek the next day, and return the same evening. No night trekking is involved — the road distance is covered by bus, and forest permissions are not issued after dark.

What food is provided?
Only vegetarian, home-cooked food is served — simple and nutritious. Breakfast is at the base before the trek and lunch at the local villager's house near the Hirdi plateau. No food stalls exist along the forest trail. For Jain food, please inform us in advance at the time of booking.

Is drinking water provided?
We follow a leave-no-trace policy and do not encourage bottled water. Please carry your own reusable bottle; well water for refills is available at the homestay. Fill up before starting the trek.

Are toilets available?
Basic toilets are available only at the base homestay, where breakfast, lunch, and changing happen. There are no toilets along the forest trail, so carry sanitiser, tissue, and toilet roll for the wild stretch.

How is the mobile network, and can I charge my phone?
Connectivity is limited — you get patchy 4G in places and no network in certain forest sections. There is no electricity along the trail, so carry a power bank and a waterproof phone cover, and inform family before you head out.

What is the weather like?
In the monsoon, expect 16 to 24 degrees Celsius, thunderstorms, wind, and 90 to 100 percent humidity with very heavy rain. Double-pack your phone and gadgets in a dry bag, wear full sleeves against insect bites, and use proper trekking shoes.

What should I wear and carry?
Proper trekking shoes with good grip are compulsory — sneakers offer no grip on the slippery rock. Carry a light backpack with a rain cover, a dry bag for valuables, a poncho, full-sleeve clothing, a power bank, and a waterproof phone cover.

Are solo and female trekkers welcome?
Yes. Solo trekkers and solo female travellers join regularly — we combine everyone into one guided group. We maintain a roughly 6:4 male-to-female ratio per batch, with a female trek leader assigned whenever available. Forest guards also check passes along the route, adding security. All trekkers must stay with the group and follow the trek leader's instructions.

Are kids allowed? Is there an age limit?
Children below 16 are allowed only with a parent. We recommend against bringing children under 10, as sudden weather, stream crossings, and possible bus delays make it unsuitable for very young kids.

What fitness level is required? Any health cautions?
Good agility and endurance help, as you cross streams and descend slippery trails. Trekkers with asthma, knee problems, heart conditions, recent surgery, or significant weight concerns should avoid this trek or consult their doctor first.

What are the safety rules on the trek?
Follow the trek leader's instructions at all times, especially at stream and waterfall crossings. Stay within sight of the guides and never wander off alone — the route is confusing and visibility drops fast in fog. Swimming in the dam or waterfalls is not allowed. Avoid selfies near slippery cliff edges. A trek introduction and dos-and-don'ts briefing is held before starting.

Is smoking, alcohol, or loud music allowed?
No. Alcohol, smoking, and banned substances are strictly prohibited; anyone caught is removed from the trek without a refund and must arrange their own return. Earphones and Bluetooth speakers are not allowed while trekking or in the homestay — part of the experience is hearing the forest itself.

Why does the Andharban trek cost more than other Maharashtra treks?
The fee covers forest permits blocked in advance with the department, on-site entry charges, and several add-on costs levied by different authorities, plus our most experienced trek leaders, who are essential given the unpredictable weather.

Do you offer camping, homestays, or the Andharban + Devkund combo?
Monsoon camping is not possible due to continuous rain, but we arrange homestays near the start point, and camping plus Andharban treks in the drier winter and summer months. We also run a combined Andharban and Devkund Waterfall trek with a night stay (two nights, two days). Post-monsoon Andharban night treks are available on request.

How do I book and pay?
Book online via the "Book Now" button on our website. We accept UPI, NEFT, IMPS, debit/credit cards, and net banking via our payment gateway. Registration is against 100 percent upfront payment only — we do not accept cash or on-the-spot bookings, as buses and forest passes must be arranged in advance. Date or batch changes within 3 days of departure carry a Rs. 200 per person transfer charge.
