Overview/Itinerary

Experience the joy of Velas' Kasav Mahotsav in 2024!

Maharashtra is blessed with a 720 kilometres long coastline and is shared with Konkan, Thane, Ratnagiri also Sindhudurg districts. Many marine creatures come to visit. However, the exact count and type are unknown from what is believed, and there is no detailed study available. In the year 2000-01, it was found that a species of turtle, Olive Ridley is a prominent visitor to the shores of Maharashtra for breeding purposes. Other species are the Green Turtle, Hawksbill and Leatherback. Much other information is already available online, like what turtles eat and how a turtle looks—the difference between a turtle, tortoise and a terrapin.

After the success of the Velas turtle conservation project, many villages in Maharashtra have started the same model and hosting the Turtle festival in India at different locations. It helps with seasonal tourism income and also helps increase turtle numbers in the sea.

Why Velas Turtle Festival Maharashtra?

Velas is a small fishing village on the western coast of Maharashtra. About 220 km away from Mumbai, a little over a hundred houses on the coast of the Arabian Sea. It is that time of the year again when a tiny grey head pokes out of the golden sand and takes a breath of the fresh salty air of the Arabian Sea.

It is a culmination of a lengthy process, which started when its mother emerged out from the rolling waves to lay her heap of 100-120 eggs on the sandy beach under cover of darkness. Oblivious to the world that awaits it outside its a sandy cocoon, the tiny hatchling is soon followed by a hundred others, all crawling their way towards the brightest lights of the horizon- in this case, the sea.

Treks and Trails, India invites you to this journey from the nest to the sea, which draws oohs and aahs from tourists - each gathered on the shore to witness this miracle of Nature. The location is Velas, a remote village in Mandangad taluka in Ratnagiri district approx. A six to seven-hour drive from Mumbai. Olive Ridley turtles' conservation trends and knowledge have spread to nearby villages that have also started similar Velas Kasav Mahotsav. Velas turtle festival best time to visit is from February to April to see the baby turtles being released at the Velas beach.

    About Olive Ridley Turtle

The Olive Ridley Turtle, whose scientific name is Lepidochelys olivacea, is the world's smallest and most common sea turtle. They can be found living in the warm oceans of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian. They are olive in colour and have a carapace top shell that is shaped like a heart. Additionally, they have five to nine pairs of scutes. The Olive Ridley's size and shape differ from place to place, with the most notable animals being found in West Africa.

Even though Olive Ridley sea turtles are primarily aquatic, which means they live in open water, they are also known to live near shorelines. They are located in the tropical regions of the world's oceans, including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Each year, in the Indian state of Odisha, over fifty percent of the world's Olive Ridley sea turtle population and ninety percent of India's population of sea turtles congregate in the same place.

What is Olive Ridley sea turtle size?

Olive ridleys are the smallest sea turtle species, even though they can weigh up to 100 pounds and have only about 2 feet long shells. The typical adult height might be between 22 and 30 inches (55 to 75 cm) (55 to 75 cm)

Maharashtra Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting sites

Around the Maharashtra coast, Olive Ridley turtles have sporadic nesting locations. In the southernmost part of the state, in the districts of Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, nesting has been observed. The absence of people on the beaches of Maharashtra during the lockdown has proven highly beneficial for Olive Ridley sea turtles that are hatching their young there.

Odisha Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting sites

The most notable instance of mass nesting by Olive Ridley sea turtles occurs on Indian beaches near Gahirmatha beach in Odisha. Olive Ridley turtles' most prominent mass nesting location in India is on the Odisha beach of Gahirmatha1. They have also been seen nesting close to the Rushikulya river's mouth in the Ganjam district of Odisha, one of the state's districts.

Odisha, also known as the Olive-Ridley Turtle.

One of the significant mass nesting areas for Olive Ridley sea turtles is along the coast of Odisha, India. The largest Olive Ridley sea turtle nesting area in the world is on Gahirmatha beach in the Kendrapara district. The government has determined that these turtles lay their eggs in one of five different locations: Devi, Gahirmatha, Rushikulya, Bahuda, and Astarang. These locations are all in Nepal.

The Olive-Ridley sea turtle is the second-smallest and most common species globally.
