This fort was built during the Bahamani rule. In 1670, Shivaji Maharaj conquered the fort from Bijapur ruler Adil Shah. In 1790, one Dhondu Bhaskar Pratinidhi rebuilt the fort, and strengthened its ramparts. The fort has the shape of a horseshoe, with a length of 1,300 meters and a width of 1,000 meters. The Arabian Sea surrounds it on its three sides. One of the fort's bastions, "Siddha Buruj", has a lighthouse which was built many years ago in 1867 and rebuilt to its present form in 1962. A temple of Goddess Bhagwati is located inside the fort.
Ganapatipule is few KM from Ratnagiri on the way to "Malgund". It has a well-known Ganesha temple. It also has a beautiful beach. MTDC resorts are right beside the beach to stay. Parashurām Temple (near Chiplun): This temple was built in 1685 by Maharshi Brahmendra.
Thiba Palace - Thibaw Palace
Thiba Palace was built in 1910–11 for the 1911–16 stay there in exile of the king and the queen of Burma(Myanmar). The place has tombs of the royal couple. The Government Polytechnic Ratnagiri functioned from Thiba palace, for a few years, it has subsequently shifted to its own premises.
Lokmanya Tilak Janmasthan
Lokmanya Tilak Janmasthan has been converted into a museum in his honor. It is the house where Lokmanya Tilak spent his first 10 years of his life. The house has been preserved as it is. Its a pleasure to walk barefoot on the cowdung smeared natural flooring. His topi & a few clothes are also on display within the museum.
On the top of the hill is the small square fort of Purnagad without outworks, covering an area of twenty-two acres. Under the Peshva's government no revenue was exacted from fields within the fort as they were brought into cultivation by fort men, gadkaris.
Konkan Tour Day Two
Devgad Beach and Devgad Fort
Devgad (or Devgarh) of the city and tehsil are derived from this historic fort lying at the confluence of Arabian Sea and Devgad creek. Kanoji Angre, chief of Martha admiralty, was instrumental in erecting this elegant looking fort in 1705. Devgad is a natural harbor and well guarded port town. Earlier big ships used to dock at the port jetty. When the fort was built it was surrounded by water from all the sides so at the time it was called as "Janjire Devgad"(Janzira means an island in Arabic). It has been spread in 120 acres. There is a Ganesh temple in the fort. Port office is situated in the fort. The lighthouse is situated here
Vijaydurg (sometimes written as Viziadrug), the oldest fort on theSindhudurg coast, was constructed during the regime of Raja Bhoja II of theShilahar dynasty (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria", as it is situated close to the village of "Girye".According to legend, this is one of only two Maratha forts where Shivaji personally hoisted the saffron flag. The other fort is "Torana". Vijaydurg Fort was called the "Eastern Gibraltar", as it was virtually impregnable. Its locational advantages include the 40 km long Waghotan/Kharepatan creek. Large vessels cannot enter the shallow water of this creek. Also, Maratha warships could be anchored in this creek and yet remain invisible from the sea. It is a protected monument
Ambolgad was a fort; build in the period of Maratha Empire. Today, it has totally wiped out. Only a broken canon and a well are remaining in fort but major attraction of Ambolgad is that it has natural gift of clean and safe beach
Yashwant Gad - Naate Village
It is located near Musa kazi port. 17 bastion (buruj) are seen on the fort which are in very good condition. Situated in Naate Village. Musa kaji port situated at a km from Naate, offers marvelous view Arabian sea and creek. It can also be consider as sunset point.
