In Search of our Milkyway Galaxy Maharashtra

Trekking and Photography have always been my two passion. I have managed to see our Galaxy Milkyway in Treks invovling night stay. It is one of the most fascinating object to see in the night sky visible during New Moon.

There are very few dark places available now for watching MilkyWay Galaxy near Mumbai, M.I.D.C are present everywhere and light pollution from Towns has made Star Gazing more difficult at Night.

Many Star Gazing clubs are present in Mumbai they offer Saturday or Weekend events for Star Gazing KhagolMandal has good events near Mumbai.

Milkway Galaxy can be spotted near Mumbai but you would need to travel atleast 150 - 300 km. Find a location which has the lowest night light pollution from Factories / Towns / Cars / Villages.

Things needed to Photograph the Milkyway

  1. Camera or DSLR with good low light photography and Mountable on Tripod
  2. Tripod - Ball Head best suitable
  3. Optional Wide Angle Lens with F2.8 apeture or F1.8 apeture ( Kit Lens works great )
  4. Infrared Light Torch
  5. Check the Sky for clouds
  6. Remote with bulb mode for exposure lasting more than 30 secs
  7. Night sky around New Moon - Google Current Moon Phase - Many Mobile apps available to find how much of Moon Phase is visible and when is the next new Moon period.

After you have found your ideal location you would need to know the timing when the Milkway Galaxy will be Visible in the Night Sky. Many application are available like Google Earth and others which will help you pin point the time period and direction. You will have 2 - 3 hours when the Milky Way Galaxy will rise and set so plan well and reach in advance to find an ideal spot.

Always mount your Camera on Tripod for Photographing the Milkway Galaxy, Dont worry about using High ISO 1600 - 3200 new Dslr having amazing low light capabilities. Find an object to use as foreground to make the picture interesting only clicking the sky the picture wont have a subject and difficult for viewer to connect.

Focus Distance in Manual i normally focus on subject using auto mode and switch to manual mode once my subject is in focus now till i dont move my camera my subject will always being in focus using this technique.

Exposure has to be taken in Manual Mode high apeture F1.8 or F2.8 if you have kit lens then F3.5. Exposure more than 30 seconds will be blur the Milkway Galaxy. ISO should be high 800 - 3200 dont worry about image noise.

Next article i will share my adventures on photographing the Milkway Galaxy near Mumbai and provide some ideal location you can also connect with me on This email address is being protected from spambots.
